How to Use a Slip Lead Properly

Slip leads are a versatile and effective tool for dog owners and trainers alike. They combine the functionality of a collar and leash in one, making them a popular choice for many. However, using a slip lead correctly is crucial to ensure the safety and comfort of your dog.

Slip leads are designed to tighten when there's tension on the leash, and loosen when that tension is released. They are an essential tool in any trainer's toolbox, but can be dangerous if not used properly (as is the case with any training tool, food included).

In this blog post, we'll cover how to use The Trainer Slip Lead properly in three easy steps, provide tips for effective use, and discuss when to use and when not to use a slip lead.

3 Easy Steps to Using a Slip Lead

  1. Position the Slip Lead Correctly

    • Step 1: If your dog walks on your left, position the loop in a "P" shape with an oversized loop, and stand in front of your dog to put it over their head. If your dog walks on your right, position the loop in a mirrored "P" shape (the loop of the "P" facing left instead of right), and stand in front of your dog to put it over their head.
    • Step 2: Slip the loop over your dog's head and position it high on the neck, just behind the ears and under the jaw. This placement is crucial for effective control and communication with your dog. The placement also ensures that the slip lead doesn't sit on top of your dog's trachea, which can cause damage if your dog pulls suddenly.
    • Step 3: Adjust the loop by moving our custom-designed stopper down to ensure it is snug but not too tight. You should be able to fit two fingers between the lead and your dog’s neck comfortably. This prevents the lead from causing discomfort or choking your dog. Our custom-designed stopper ensures that your dog doesn't slip out of the lead.

  2. Use Gentle Pressure

    • When using a slip lead, apply gentle pressure to guide your dog. The lead should loosen when your dog is walking calmly and tighten slightly when you need to move them into the correct position or guide them. Avoid yanking or pulling sharply, as this can cause injury and create negative associations with the lead.

  3. Practice and Reinforce Positive Behavior

    • Use positive reinforcement, such as treats or praise, to reward your dog for walking calmly and responding to the slip lead. Consistent practice and positive reinforcement will help your dog understand what is expected of them and make walks more enjoyable for both of you.

Tips for Using a Slip Lead

  • Start Slowly: If your dog is not used to a slip lead, introduce it gradually. Allow them to wear it around the house for short periods before taking them on a walk. You can also break it down into smaller steps and reward at each step—for example, rewarding them when you bring out the slip lead, rewarding when you put it over their head, rewarding when you adjust the custom-designed stopper down.
  • Stay Calm: Dogs can sense your energy. Stay calm and assertive when using a slip lead to help your dog feel secure and understand your cues.
  • Regularly Check Fit: Ensure the slip lead remains properly adjusted throughout your walk. It should stay high on the neck without slipping down.

When to Use a Slip Lead

  • Training Sessions: Slip leads are excellent for training purposes, but we recommend them for dogs who already have some understanding of leash pressure.
  • Short Walks: Use a slip lead for short walks or when you're transporting a dog from one place to another.
  • Vet Visits or Grooming: Slip leads can be handy during vet visits or grooming sessions to keep your dog calm and controlled.

When Not to Use a Slip Lead

  • Extended Periods: Avoid using a slip lead for long walks or extended periods, as it can cause discomfort or chafing on your dog’s neck.
  • Unsupervised and tethered: Never leave a dog unattended or tethered with a slip lead on, as it can pose a strangulation risk if the dog gets caught on something.
  • Dogs with Respiratory Issues: If your dog has respiratory problems or a sensitive throat, consult with your vet before using a slip lead. A different tool may be a better option in these cases.

Using a slip lead properly can enhance your training sessions and improve your walks with your dog. By following these steps and tips, you'll ensure that your dog is comfortable and responsive, making your time together more enjoyable and productive.
